AMECEA Chairman

His Grace Archbishop Tarcisius Gervazio Ziyaye, Archbishop of Blantyre, Malawi was born on 19th May 1949 at Khombe Village, Ludzi Parish in Mchinji District.

He was ordained a priest on 14th August 1977 and was later on appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Dedza on 21st January 1992. He was consecrated on 23rd May 1992.

On 29th May 1993, Most Rev. Ziyaye was appointed coadjutor Bishop of Lilongwe and later on became the Bishop of Lilongwe on 29th November 1994. He was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Blantyre on 15th February 2001.

Most Rev. Tarcisius Ziyaye is the ninth chairman of AMECEA, having taken over the office in 2008 where the previous chairman was Most Rev. Paul Bakyenga from Uganda.

The previous Chairmen of AMECEA from it inception in 1961 include the following:

  2. Rt. Rev. Vincent McCauley from Uganda (1964-1973)
  3. Most Rev. James Odongo from Uganda (1973-1979)
  4. H.E. Medardo Mozombwe from Zambia (1979-1985)
  5. Rt. Rev. Dennis de Jong from Zambia (1986-1989)
  6. Most Rev. Nicodemus Kirima from Kenya (1989-1995)
  7. Most Rev. Josephat Lebulu from Tanzania (1995-2002)
  8. Most Rev. Paul Bakyenga from Uganda (2002-2008)
